March 1st, 2017 #SOL

It’s March 1st. Last week we had warm temperatures climbing all the way to 70°.
Today I found snow on my car as I left school late having spent time grading, planning and reviewing benchmarking data. They say in like a lion, out like a lamb. I hope so, by March I’m ready to bid winter farewell. Even with this year’s mild winter, I can’t wait for the crocuses to bloom and the grass to grow emerald green.

This March is different. In 62 more instructional days school will end. (I wasn’t counting, but another teacher mentioned it and now it’s stuck in my head.) 62 more days with my class, 62 more days at my school, 62 more days until I “retire” from a job I love. While many are ready to see these days go by quickly, I want them to slow down. I love my job. I love my class, even on “those” days. It’s my passion. I’m not ready to say goodbye. The changes in the pension system forced my hand after 34 years.

While I’ll pack boxes and close the door to Room 202 June 8th, I hope I won’t be closing the door on teaching. I have my resumé is ready (after 23 years), my personal statement written (all 2200 words). I hope to find a job across state lines where I can still pursue my passion, or maybe in a private school I’ll continue my calling.

Too soon it will be “time for me to fly.” I’ll make sure I give my fifth graders their wings first, they too are leaving elementary school and moving on to middle school. New possibilities, new adventures, a bit of uncertainty, a new door to open.

“Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don’t wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.”

Very touching. As a relatively new teacher (8 years in), stories like yours inspire me to stay in the classroom for my entire career. Thank you for showing the side of a retiree that is not willing to stop.
